Our Values

Disillusioned by the compromises of the fashion industry DeMellier was founded by Mireia Llusia-Lindh with the vision of doing things differently: to design handbags that would make women feel empowered and made with integrity while giving back to those less fortunate. These three values remain our core values today, guiding everything we do. Discover more below about our DNA, who we are and what we stand for.

By Women, For Women

Each piece in the collection is designed in London by women, for women, with the aim to make women feel special and empowered. Our aim is to design pieces that are modern yet timeless. Small treasures that will stand the test of time and that will make the women wearing them feel as amazing as they are.

When creating the collection, Mireia and our all-female design team think first and foremost about all the women who will be wearing our bags. They design every style to be modern and beautiful, often inspired by our love of art, interior design & architecture, but also practical, so that it will carry comfortably every woman’s treasured essentials and become a loyal trusted companion throughout their day.

Beyond designing beautiful handbags, DeMellier serves as a platform to treasure women and put them at the forefront, so they are able to share their stories and inspire others. This effort to support and champion women is pursued in all areas of our business from our all-female de- sign team to the female talents behind our seasonal campaigns as well as our regular features on female role models.

Handcrafted with Integrity

At DeMellier we believe in working with partners who we know well and trust, who offer fair working conditions and a safe working environment. We believe in craftsmanship and producing in Europe where the techniques of producing luxury leather goods are deeply rooted. All our handbags are handcrafted in the south of Spain by local craftsmen and women with special attention to texture and detail, using the finest Italian and Spanish leather and material. It can take 50 different pieces or more and 12 skilful artisans to make one of our bags. Each style requires an incredibly elaborate and intricate process, making each handbag a small piece of art. In a world where fast fashion and cheap production is unfortunately becoming the norm, we want to treasure and support the artisanal processes that we believe luxury should stand for.

We believe in fair pricing, to be able to offer our customers products of the highest quality at attainable prices by keeping reasonable margins rather than inflated ones.

We believe in using sustainable materials as much as we possibly can. Our handbags and wallets are all made of real leather of the highest quality, sourced in Italy and Spain and complying with the highest EU regulations and standards. The leathers we use come only from agricultural livestock such as bovines or goats – we never use exotic leather – and as such is a byproduct from the meat industry, meaning that no animal is bred only for its leather. As a byproduct, leather does not consume additional land or resources. Should it not be used in leather goods like ours, leather would become waste posing big environmental threats.

All our leather suppliers are certified by the European Leather Working Group and many have been awarded Bronze and Gold ratings, guaranteeing the highest standards of sustainability and sourcing. Some customers have asked us about vegan leather handbags, this is something we are looking to make for our vegan customers but unfortunately all leather-like options currently available on the market are plastic-based. Vegan leather is usually made of PVC or polyurethane, which are synthetic fibers that have a similar environmental impact to polyester and thus not environ- ment-friendly. We will keep looking into this and hopefully some new more sustainable vegan options will soon be developed. Our packaging is also made of partially recycled paper sourced from FSC accredited suppliers and natural cotton, thus fully recyclable.

We believe in minimising waste at every step of production. No raw material nor finished handbags ever go to waste, all stock is either sold or donated to local apprentice schools or charities. We produce in limited quantities and often launch styles on pre-order, so that we can react better to our custom- er demands and avoid carrying excess inventory, avoiding waste in the process.

We Give Back – A Bag, A Life

Giving back is at the core of DeMellier’s DNA. For every piece we sell, DeMellier funds lifesaving vaccines and medical treat- ments aimed to save the life of a child in need through A Bag, A Life, our permanent charity initiative in collaboration with SOS Children’s Villages and local vaccine providers.

Mireia created DeMellier to reflect her personal values and giving back to those less fortunate is something she strongly believes in.

She wanted to support those who are most vulnerable, and as a mother of three, an aunt and a godmother, found helping orphan children in developing countries who are living in extremely difficult circumstances and often dying from preventable causes, an incredibly worthy cause. So we launched A Bag, A Life as a permanent charity initiative and partnered with international children’s charity SOS Children’s Villages to make it happen.
